RE: Endorse Frewhwater Pulp Company Proposal

Dear Congressman Thompson,

I’d like to request your support in bringing the Frewhwater Pulp mill conversion to reality. The proposal draws together so many of the values that resonate in Humboldt County: sustainable use of regional wood resources, meaningful employment, products that appeal to environmentally-minded consumers, and a proud spirit of “appropriate technology.”

Reviving the mill will make use of the unique chlorine-free capability of the existing infrastructure. The potential proposal ot utilize syngas and bring the facility towards net zero greenhouse gas emissions would fit exactly with critical global, national and local goals to reduce the extreme effects of global climate change. Restoring the value of wood chips to the log will expand the economic benefits region-wide and help keep non-industrial and industrial forest landowners productively on their land.

The proposal starts from a point where most of the pieces are already in place - industrial facility, ready workers, distribution system, water supply, wood supply and eco-conscious consumers. A broad cross-section of the regional community sees the great potential and endorses the project.

As a long time resident of Humboldt County, consultant on forest resources in the California Senate, former Director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, and now consulting on domestic and international forest climate policy, I’ve been involved in many aspects of our regional forest debates. This proposal is remarkable in bringing so many interests together and officering so many benefits. Your support will help bring the project to “switch-on” readiness.

Thank you for your continued dedicated efforts on behalf of your district.

Sincerely,
